Guided Reading is a high priority at Fulfen and is taught as a whole class. Throughout the school, Guided Reading lessons take place focused around a text that children would not normally select themselves and can find links between. A sequence of Guided Reading lessons encompass the different reading domains: vocabulary, inference, prediction, sequencing, retrieval, summary and explanation. If you were to walk into a Fulfen Primary School reading lesson, you could find yourselves immersed in a modern-day pop song; a classic war poem; a non-fiction text about spiders; or a journey into Narnia.
How to help your child
The best way you can help your child with reading is to engage with reading regularly at home; whether this is listening to them reading a book, sharing a book with them or reading them a bed-time story. Just make sure it's an enjoyable time and celebrate their successes with them.

We use the Accelerated Reading scheme from Year 2 to Year 6, which has a proven track record of raising the enjoyment of reading as well as attainment levels.
Your child will take a STAR Reading Assessment every half term. STAR Reading is used to determine your child’s reading level. It is a computer-based reading assessment program that uses computer-adaptive technology. Questions continually adjust to your child’s responses. If the child’s answer is correct, the difficulty level is increased. If the child cannot answer a question or answers incorrectly, then the difficulty level is reduced. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately ten minutes. The results from the test will give your child a Zone of Proximal Development (ZDP) score to guide them to the selection of books that will provide the correct level of challenge.
All books at school are labelled and stickered to clearly guide the children into making the best choices for them. Your child can also read books from home. To check if a book is in the Accelerated Reading program and to check its ZPD please go to: www.arbookfind.co.uk
After completing a book, children will take a test on that book and their score is recorded on their Accelerated Reader account.
Our exciting new library opened in the Spring term 2022. This allows children at Fulfen to access an even greater range of books at Fulfen.
