Welcome to the Governors’ page.
As Chair of Governors of Fulfen Primary School I would like to introduce you to our work in support of the school and your children. As you may know, all our Governors undertake the responsible task of Governorship on a voluntary basis. They give their time and expertise freely for the benefit of the life of the school.
There are 17 Governors altogether including the Headteacher, who is ‘ex-officio’. They represent parents, teaching and non-teaching staff, the community and the Local Authority and have a termly meeting to an agenda which is set by the Local Authority. However, much of the work is undertaken in smaller sub-committees which meet generally once a term. There are 6 main sub-committees which are:
• Finance and staffing
• Curriculum and pupil progress
• Premises and Health and Safety
• Early Years and admissions
• Well being
• Treetops
By law we also have to have a sub-committee for pupil disciplinary appeals and staff dismissal purposes as well as a group of Governors who undertake the annual performance review of the Headteacher.
With a budget of over one million pounds per year and a team of over 30 people , there is much work for the Finance and Staffing sub-committee to undertake. The Curriculum and Pupil Progress sub-committee monitors the direction of the curriculum ad receives regular reports on the progress of pupils. Premises looks after the fabric of the building and the outside environment but also covers health and safety aspects which are vitally important. Early Years sub-committee focuses on the education and care of our youngest children and, naturally, oversees admissions to the school. There is a separate Governors’ group looking after Treetops, our pre-school provision and the recently created Well Being sub-committee deals with all matters of care and the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda. Named Governors are required by law for Special Educational Needs and Child Protection
So, as you will have seen, Governors’ responsibilities cover every aspect of the life of the school. Their role is to determine priorities, set direction, oversee and monitor the smooth running of the school and hold all staff accountable for their work. Any shortfalls are ultimately the responsibility of the Governors! Of course, Governors delegate the day-to-day leadership and management of the school to the Headteacher, his leadership team and the staff. Each person has a role to play and the teamwork at Fulfen is particularly effective.
The future needs of the school are driven by a clear vision which Governors re-visit from time to time For the next 5 year period, it is hoped to extend the curriculum provision in a more personalized way for individual children and, of course, to maintain the wish for every child to achieve his or her full potential.
Increased use of Information and Communication Technology will, it is hoped, help us to achieve the above aims whilst the sure but steady increase in pupil attainment will also be our goal. The curriculum is constantly being revised and refined in line with new initiatives which are selected to meet the particular educational needs of our children. There is an annual School Improvement Plan which identifies the priorities and tasks for the year ahead and Governors have an input into this.
The work of Governors, essential to the running of every school, is often the unseen mechanism and sometimes becomes shrouded in mystery. I hope this introduction helps to break this mystery and gives you an understanding of how we work. You can keep up to date with our developments by looking at the minutes of our termly meetings, posted in the foyer of school or, more directly by speaking to a parent Governor, or indeed any Governor. This web-site holds even more information.
The Governors are an ever- changing group of people, so keep up through the school’s noticeboard and newsletters. If you would like to be even more involved, vacancies for parent and community Governors arise from time to time, so let us or the Headteacher know of your interest.
Assuring you of our very best work in support of Fulfen Primary School.
